Eye Pillow vs Sleep Mask

Calm misty water at first light, black and white

They look like cousins and tend to get shelved together, but a sleep mask and a weighted eye pillow are built for genuinely different jobs. A sleep mask has one task, blocking light, and it does it strapped to your head for hours at a time. A weighted eye pillow does several things at once, blocking light, adding calming pressure, and offering warmth or cold, across shorter, more deliberate stretches. Knowing which one you actually want comes down to what you are trying to fix.

When a sleep mask wins

If the only problem is light, and you need the solution to stay put all night, a sleep mask is the right tool. It is the better choice for sleeping through a sunrise, for red-eye flights, and for side and stomach sleepers who would dislodge a loose pillow the moment they roll over. Its whole virtue is that you can forget it is there.

When a weighted eye pillow wins

If you want more than darkness, the eye pillow pulls ahead. The gentle weight is calming in a way a thin mask is not, which makes it the better pick for stress, headaches, and the deliberate ten-minute rest. It can be chilled for migraines, puffy eyes, and hot flashes, or warmed for tension, none of which a sleep mask can do. The tradeoff is that it is made for resting on your back, not for an all-night marathon.

The short version

For sleeping through light, choose a sleep mask. For calming down, easing a headache, or taking a real break, choose a weighted eye pillow. Plenty of people keep both for their different jobs. For the fuller picture, see our weighted eye pillow guide.
