How to Use An Eye Pillow Hot and Cold

Minimal black and white seascape

An eye pillow is one of the few wellness objects with essentially no learning curve. You put it over your eyes and you rest. But a couple of small techniques make the difference between pleasant and properly soothing, especially once heat or cold enters the picture. Here is the whole method, which takes about a minute to learn.

Cold

Seal the eye pillow in a bag and freeze it for at least thirty minutes. Rest it over closed eyes for five to ten minutes. Cold is the move for migraines, puffy eyes, hot flashes, and tired eyes after screens. A flaxseed fill holds its chill for fifteen to twenty minutes, so there is rarely a reason to leave it on longer. If the cold feels sharp, wrap the pillow in a thin cloth.

Warm

Microwave the eye pillow for 15 to 30 seconds. Start slowly to avoid overheating your pillow, then let it rest for a few seconds and test the temperature on the inside of your wrist before it goes anywhere near your eyes. The skin there is delicate, so warm should mean comforting, never hot. Do not exceed forty-five seconds or reheat repeatedly without letting it cool. Warmth suits tension, sinus pressure, and the wind-down before sleep.

Room temperature

For sleep, meditation, or savasana, most people skip the temperature step entirely and use the pillow as it is. The weight and the darkness do the work on their own.

Care

Spot clean the cover and never soak a filled eye pillow, since flaxseed and water do not mix. Stored somewhere dry, a good one lasts for years. For more on what is inside and how to choose one, see our weighted eye pillow guide and the collection itself.
